SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, has created a series of powerful rockets over the years, and the Falcon Heavy is their most powerful to date. The Falcon Heavy is a partially reusable super heavy-lift launch vehicle that can carry cargo into Earth orbit and beyond. With 27 Merlin engines powering it, the Falcon Heavy generates over 5 million pounds of thrust and can lift payloads as heavy as 140,000 pounds into orbit. This makes it the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two.
Capabilities and future plans
The Falcon Heavy has a variety of potential applications, including launching satellites into orbit, sending humans to the Moon or Mars, and even mining asteroids. It is the only rocket currently capable of launching the Dragon XL spacecraft, which is designed to carry humans and cargo to Mars. SpaceX plans to use the Falcon Heavy to launch the first crewed mission to Mars in 2024.
