Liberty Flames Football: A New Era Begins

The Flames Kick Off a New Season with a Fresh Start

Liberty University football is poised to make a strong showing in the 2023 season under the leadership of new head coach Jamey Chadwell. Following the departure of former head coach Hugh Freeze, Chadwell, formerly of Coastal Carolina, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to Lynchburg, Virginia.

With a dynamic offense led by quarterback Charlie Brewer and a seasoned defense anchored by linebacker Durrell Johnson, the Flames have the potential to make a deep run in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

Key Players to Watch

  • Charlie Brewer, QB: A veteran signal-caller with 30 career starts. Brewer threw for over 3,000 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2022.
  • Durrell Johnson, LB: A leader on the defensive side of the ball, Johnson recorded 104 tackles last season.
  • DJ Stubbs, RB: A dynamic and versatile running back, Stubbs rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 12 touchdowns in 2022.

Schedule and Expectations

Liberty's schedule includes a mix of challenging matchups and winnable games. The Flames will face ACC powerhouse Wake Forest in their season opener and will also host traditional FCS power Campbell.

Expectations are high for the Flames, who are predicted to finish in the top half of the FBS Independent Team Rankings. A successful season could culminate in a bowl game appearance.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Despite the coaching change, Liberty football remains in a strong position thanks to a talented roster and a supportive administration. The Flames have made significant progress in recent years, moving up to the FBS level and securing several bowl game appearances.

Eyes on the Future

As Liberty football enters the Chadwell era, the future looks bright. With a talented team and an experienced coaching staff, the Flames have the potential to become a perennial contender in the FBS.
